Overview

In indoor spaces with low air ventilation, the infectious aerosols exhaled by infected individuals can accumulate, remain suspended & infectious for days. These infectious aerosols are easily inhaled deep into the lungs & increase the risk of cross infection for visitors & staff.

01.
High Ventilation rates are crucial to reduce the concentration of infectious Aerosols in indoor spaces.
02.
SpaceUV Air Disinfection systems add 10 to 24 ACH of pathogen clearance for less than ₹28 per square foot.
03.
SpaceUV systems eliminate the need for costly HVAC upgrades or the use of Noisy Air purifiers.

How it works?

Technology based on 100+ years of scientific research on Upper Air Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation technology

Step I
UVC Disinfection zone is created only in the upper part of the room.

Step II
Airborne pathogens flow into this zone by Split AC's Airflow

Step III
After receiving appropriate UV energy pathogens are killed by DNA/RNA damage.

Risk of Low
Air Ventilation

Humans produce respiratory droplets ranging from 0.1 to 1000 µm in form of tiny drops of saliva or respiratory fluids when we talk, shout, sing, cough, sneeze or simply breathe.

01.
A large proportion of COVID-19 infections appears to be occurring indoors through infectious bioaerosols produced by asymptomatic individuals during breathing & speaking.

02.
Lack of continuous good air ventilation and/or air disinfection in such bioaerosol-laden indoor workspaces dramatically increases the risk of Covid-19 cross infections to staff/customers.

Frequently
Asked Questions

What is ACH & why is it Important?

ACH = Air Changes per Hour.

The best protection against an acute airborne threat like COVID-19 is eliminating it from the air as quickly as possible. The equivalent ACH calculation provides you with a single metric that represents your bottom-line protection for a given pathogen.

For sufficient safety from cross-infections by airborne SARS-Cov-2 a minimum ACH of 6 to 12 is recommended by CDC, ASHRAE & NIOSH.

(SpaceUV systems helps achieve upto 24 equivalent ACH!)

What is SpaceUV & what does SpaceUV systems do?

SpaceUV is a team of IIT Bombay Graduates who are leveraging their expertise in advanced engineering algorithms & simulations to design high efficacy non-imaging based UVC optical systems to maximize safety from Airborne Pathogen, including SARS-Cov-2.

SpaceUV systems achieves rapid & near real time inactivation of Airborne pathogens which offer maximum safety from airborne Covid-19 infections. Our systems are based on proven Upper Room UVGI systems (recommended by US-CDC, ASHRAE & NIOSH)

What is upper-room UVGI?

Upper-room UVGI is a safe means of air disinfection applicable in rooms with ceiling height of 9ft & higher. Specially designed UVC fixtures irradiate only the air above 2 meters thereby constantly disinfecting the upper air volume in given room.

Upper Room UVGI are most effective with good air mix generated by ceiling fans, wall fans, AC's or HVAC ventilation. But even without air flow generated such air movers, air constantly mixes by movements and normal convective air currents inside the room.

Why is upper-room UVGI more effective than other Technologies?

Upper-room UVGI disinfects large volumes of room air (above occupants’ heads) at once, resulting in high "equivalent" air changes per hour (ACH) in terms of air disinfection.

On an average SpaceUV systems generate 5x to 10x more ACH than any other technology for upto 1/10th of energy costs. Refer our White paper for more details.

Odor control and CO2 removal are accomplished by relatively low levels of ventilation (1 to 2 ACH), but air disinfection requires much higher rates of ventilation (6 to 12 ACH), or the equivalent produced by upper-room GUV.

Two hospital controlled studies have shown upper-room GUV to be about 80% effective against tuberculosis (TB)spread. Even when GUV is confined to the upper room, good air mixing (ideally with low-velocity ceiling fans but easily accomplished by other types of forced-air ventilation) results in very high equivalent ACH in the lower, occupied space —estimated to be an additional 24 ACH in a South African study.

Can UVC effectively inactivate the new SARS-CoV-2 mutants?

Yes, it can!

UV-C breaks down germs on a molecular level. Most of the pathogens can build up an immunity to chemical cleaners and other methods. UVC on other hand breaks down the DNA/RNA of the pathogen without an option for a response. This ensure effective protection with SpaceUV against all future mutations of SARS-Cov-2 and other pathogens.

What technology is SpaceUV system based on?

SpaceUV systems are based on proven Upper Room UVGI. SpaceUV works like a giant filter installed across the ceiling in the room creating a high efficacy air disinfection zone which inactivates the airborne pathogens emitted by an infected individual(s) within the room every time pathogens pass through this zone, providing maximum real time safety to other staff & customers.

Specialized optical fixtures in SpaceUV distribute UVC light through the upper portion of the room, providing very high degree of protection against person-to-person aerosol transmissions in near real time. Natural air currents, air flow from ceiling/wall Fans, AC's &/or warm breath carry pathogens emitted in the lower room through the irradiated zone, which is well above head height & eye level, where pathogens are killed / inactivated.

Is SpaceUV Safe for use around Humans & Pets?

Yes, absolutely 100% Safe!

SpaceUV systems complies 100% with Strict Occupational Safety Norms established by US-NIOSH, US-CDC, ASHRAE and as required by UNE:00068, IEC 62471 & ISO 15858 global safety standards of human exposure to artificial optical radiation.

As per IES Photobiology Committee, upper-air UVGI (ie technology used in SpaceUV) is the safest, most effective application of UVC. A average 15 min UV exposure from Solar radiation in Maharashtra is lot more than 10 hours of continuous exposure to stray UVC from SpaceUV!

SpaceUV systems have been tested by Dept of Biosciences & Bioengineering at IIT Bombay with over 57 triplicated UVC irradiance measurements, that concluded the stray UVC generated by SpaceUV in the human occupied space is much safer than the required UVC safety limit established by ASHRAE, NIOSH, UNE:00068, IEC 62471 & ISO 15858.

To limit the UVC intensity in the lower room(i.e. human occupied spaces)to a safe level, all SpaceUV upper room UVGI systems are designed with use of most advanced Raytracing simulations & tested with high resolution UVC meters designed for evaluation of Occupational Safety hazards.

During normal use, the UVC irradiation on people around device is way below allowable regulatory threshold limits of 0.2µW/cm² as published by US-NIOSH, US-CDC, ASHRAE and as required by UNE:00068, IEC 62471 & ISO 15858.

Any benchmarks on safety of SpaceUV technology?

To limit the UVC intensity in the lower room (ie human occupied spaces) to a safe level, all SpaceUV upper room UVGI systems are designed with use of most advanced Raytracing simulations & tested with high resolution UVC meters designed for evaluation of Occupational Safety hazards due to stray UVC exposure. We make sure during normal use, the UVC irradiation on people around SpaceUV is way below required regulatory limits of 0.2µW/cm².

As per IES Photobiology Committee, upper-air UVGI (ie technology used in SpaceUV) is the safest, most effective application of UVC for disinfection applications. Any incidental UV exposures in the workplace would not  increase one’s lifetime risk for cataract or skin cancer, compared to one's daily exposure to the UV radiant energy in sunlight. Upon exposure, UVC cannot penetrate our skin to cause any irreversible damage, as solar UV can, which is far more penetrating and reaches the germinative (new-cell producing) layers in the skin, with the result that skin cancer risk is significant, and sunburns can be severe with Solar UV than with UVC.

- A average 15 min UV exposure to Solar radiation in Maharashtra is lot more 10 hours of continuous exposure to stray UVC from SpaceUV!

- As per CIE 187:2010 report, the risk of any potential side-effects of UV-C exposure are negligible than that from other sources to which we are routinely exposed to, such as exposure to daylight ie solar radiation.

- Further, SpaceUV systems have been tested by Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering at IIT Bombay with over 57 triplicated UVC irradiance measurements, the UVC in the human occupied space is much lower than the UVC safety limit as required by international standards on occupational health.

Conclusion:
While chances of accidental overexposure to UVC are negligible with SpaceUV systems, events of overexposure may result in temporary eye or skin irritation, the side-effects of which disappears within 24-36 hours, & there are no known cases of long-term health effects due to UVC overexposure at the extremely safe levels of stray UVC generated with SpaceUV systems.
